Media

Keep every image for your trips, destinations, guides and places to stay in one library, with folders, tags, cropping, alt text in each language and a bin.

How-to guide4 min read

Media holds the images your team uses across Travel Orbit. Open it from Library in the sidebar. Everyone can look through it; Admins and Editors can upload, crop, describe, file and bin images.

The page has three panes: folders on the left, images in the middle and the details of the chosen image on the right. Drag the handles between them to make a pane wider.

Upload

Drop images anywhere on the images, or use Upload at the top, and you can pick several at once. JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, HEIC and TIFF work, up to 15 MB each. Travel Orbit turns them into WebP no wider or taller than 2,400 pixels, so they load quickly on your booking pages.

When you upload a single photo, Travel Orbit offers to crop it first. Choose Upload cropped, or Upload without cropping to keep the whole photo. Tick Also add the uncropped original to the library to get both.

Images you upload straight on a trip, a guide or a place to stay land in the library too. Images added from a link, such as a photo already on northwilds.com, stay where they are.

If you are looking at a folder when you upload, the new images go into it.

Find an image

  • Search: looks through file names, alt text and tags, such as reine or winter.
  • Folders: pick one on the left to see what is in it, or All images for everything.

The newest images come first.

Describe an image

Select an image to open its details on the right. Click the preview to see it larger, with its address to copy or open in a new tab.

  • File name: the name you see in the library.
  • Alt text: what the image shows, for people who use a screen reader and for search engines, such as "Walkers on the ridge above Reine at sunrise". When you publish in more than one language, a tab for each language appears. A green dot means that language has alt text. Languages without it use the text in your main language.
  • Folder: pick one of your folders, or All images for none.
  • Tags: words that help you find the image later, such as summer or kayaking. Press Enter after each one.
  • Focus: choose Focus and click the part that must stay in view when the image is cut to fit, such as a face or a summit.

Choose Save changes when you are done. Choosing an image for a trip copies its alt text, and you can still change it on the trip.

Used on lists every trip, destination, guide, place to stay and logo that uses the image, so you know what changes before you crop it or move it to the bin.

Crop

Choose Crop in the details, or the crop button on an image, to cut it to a shape such as 1:1, 3:2, 16:9 or a 1.91:1 share image, or drag the frame freely. The turn buttons rotate it a quarter at a time. A warning shows when the result is under 1,200 pixels wide, which is fine for cards but soft as a full-width banner.

  • Apply crop: replaces the image, and every trip, destination, guide and place to stay using it shows the new crop.
  • Save as copy: adds the crop as a new image and leaves the first one as it was.
  • Restore original: takes the crop off again. The full image you uploaded is always kept.

Images added from a link can't be cropped. Upload them to crop them.

Folders

Choose New folder, type a name and press Enter. Drag images onto a folder on the left to move them, or select several with the round tick on each card, or Select all, and use Move to folder. A folder stays even while it is empty. To delete a folder, empty it first, then use the bin icon next to its name.

Choose images on a trip

Image fields on trips, itinerary days, destinations, guides and places to stay take an image dropped straight on them, Upload to browse your computer, and Choose from media. It opens the library: search, then click an image to use it. Where a field takes several images, click each one you want and choose Done. You can upload in the same window too.

On your phone

The Orbit app has the same library: browse, search, upload from Photos, Files or the camera, describe, file and bin images, and change a trip's photos. See Travel Orbit in the Orbit app.

The bin

The bin icon on an image, or Move to bin with several selected, takes images out of the library, but pages that use them keep showing them. Find them on the Bin page in the sidebar and Restore them. See The bin.

Only owners of your organisation can Delete for good, from the Bin page. That removes the file itself, so pages still using it show a broken image. Check Used on first.
