Your booking pages

The booking site Travel Orbit runs for you: its address, the trip pages, checkout, how places are held while travellers pay, and the destinations pages.

Explanation5 min read

Every organisation gets a booking site from Travel Orbit, ready as soon as you publish a trip. Travellers find your trips there, read about them, choose a date and book. It shows your brand name, logo and colour from Booking settings. If you build your own website, it can link here to book, or take bookings itself with the booking API.

The address

The booking site's address ends in your Booking address from Booking settings, such as app.bifrostorbit.com/travel/book/northwilds. Admins choose it. Each trip adds its own address after it, such as /book/northwilds/lofoten-ridge-walk. Select View on booking site on a published trip to open its page.

If you change a trip's address, the old one keeps working and sends visitors on. If you change the booking address itself, links you already shared stop working.

What travellers see

At the top, every page has Trips, Destinations and My bookings, and a language menu when you offer more than one language. The footer shows your registration number, your travel guarantee and a link to your booking terms, when you have filled them in.

  • Trips: a card for every published, public trip, with its photo, where it goes, the next departure, places left and the price from. Unlisted and private trips aren't listed; they open only from their own link. Drafts never show.
  • The trip page: the photos, facts such as length, difficulty, group size and rating, then highlights, the description, the itinerary day by day, what's included, the guides, and Dates and prices. Each date shows its places left, Full, Closed or Guaranteed, the price from, and a Book or Request button. Below come the rooms and options, the extras, how payment works, the cancellation terms, the booking terms and the brochure. A private trip says who it is for above its name, such as "A private trip for Bergen Climbing Club".
  • Destinations: every continent and country your public trips visit, with the built-in facts, a map, the trips there and, once you publish it, your own text. See Destinations.

When a trip is sold in more than one currency, travellers switch currency on the trip page and at checkout.

Checkout

See dates and book on a trip page jumps to its dates, and Book next to a date opens checkout. It has four steps:

  1. Dates and travellers: the departure and how many travellers in each room or package.
  2. Traveller details: the lead traveller's email and everyone's names, plus whatever your booking form asks.
  3. Extras: anything they want to add, and a discount code.
  4. Review and pay: the total, the payment schedule and what is due now. Travellers tick that they accept your booking terms and the trip's own terms, then select Book and pay with the amount due now. When nothing is due yet, the button is Book and add a card.

The secure payment form then opens on the same page: travellers select Pay with the amount, or Save card and confirm to save a card for later payments. Payment goes through your own Stripe account, with any method your Stripe account offers. Card details go straight to Stripe and never reach Travel Orbit.

Trips set to Ask to book, and every trip while Stripe isn't connected, show Request instead. Travellers then select Send request, nothing is charged, and you confirm it under Requests. See Bookings.

Places held while travellers pay

When a traveller starts paying, their places are held: for 15 minutes unless an Admin changes Hold places for in Booking settings, from 5 to 120 minutes. Checkout shows the time left. If they don't finish in time, Travel Orbit releases the places by itself, checkout says "Your hold has ended", and the traveller can start again. Nobody else can take held places in the meantime.

After booking

The confirmation page shows the reference, the trip and the departure. It says one of:

  • You're booked: the payment went through and the booking is confirmed. Travellers get an email with the details.
  • Your request is sent: for a request. Nothing has been charged.
  • We're confirming your payment: some payment methods take a few seconds. An email follows when it's done.
  • Your payment didn't go through: the places stay held for a few minutes so they can try another card or method.
  • This booking is no longer active: the hold ran out or the booking was cancelled.

Travellers look after their bookings under My bookings, the traveller portal.

Languages

The booking site shows your trips in the language the traveller chooses, and its own buttons and labels in English, Norwegian or German, with English for other languages. Anything you haven't translated shows in your main language. See Languages.

When Travel Orbit is paused

Travel Orbit doesn't have plans yet, so nothing pauses today. Once it does, a trial that ends without a plan, or a paid plan that ends, pauses it like the other satellites:

  • The booking site, including My bookings, shows a short "temporarily unavailable" page with your name, and the booking API answers 402 with the code subscription_inactive.
  • Automatic instalments and payment reminders wait. Straight after a plan is chosen, each one that came due is charged or sent once, and the booking's history says Charged after the plan was restored or Reminder sent after the plan was restored. A payment that was under way still completes.
  • Trips and settings can't change. Your team can still sign in, see everything and look after bookings: book for a traveller, confirm requests, change traveller details and notes, record payments, refund and cancel. Travellers can't pay through My bookings until a plan is chosen, so record payments they make another way.

Nothing is deleted, and choosing a plan brings it all back within a minute.
