# Discount codes

> Make codes such as SPRING15 that take a percentage or an amount off, for all trips or some, within the dates and number of uses you choose.

Travellers type a discount code at checkout, and the discount shows as its own line on the booking. It comes off the price of the trip and its extras. Editors and Admins can make and change codes; everyone can see them under **Discount codes**.

## Make a code

1. Open **Discount codes** and select **New code**.
2. Under **Code**, type the code, such as `SPRING15`. Codes have 3 to 30 characters: letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. They are not case sensitive: `spring15` works too.
3. Under **Takes off**, choose:
   - **A percentage:** from 1% to 100% of the booking, extras included. It works in every currency.
   - **An amount:** such as €100, with the currency next to it. It comes off once per booking, only works on bookings paid in that currency, and never takes off more than the booking costs.
4. Narrow it down if you need to, then select **Create code**.

| Limit | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Trips** | **All trips**, or **Only some trips** that you pick. |
| **For departures from** and **Until** | Only departures starting between these dates, such as 1 April to 31 May 2027 for a spring offer. |
| **Can be used from** and **Until the end of** | When travellers can use the code. |
| **Most uses** | How many bookings can use it, such as the first 20. Empty means no limit. |
| **Active** | Switch it off to pause a code without deleting it. |

The list shows each code's state: **Active**, **Off**, **Not yet valid**, **Expired** or **Used up**, with the departures and booking dates it covers and how often it has been **Used**. **A quote with a code** shows how the booking API prices a booking with one of your codes, without using it up.

## What travellers see

If a code can't be used, the checkout says why, so travellers aren't left guessing:

- That code is no longer active
- That code is not valid yet
- That code has expired
- That code has been used up
- That code is not valid for this trip
- That code is not valid for this departure date
- That code is not valid in this currency

A code counts as used when the booking is made. If the traveller doesn't finish paying and the hold runs out, the use is given back.

## Change, turn off or delete a code

Select **Change** on a code, make your changes and select **Save code**. Changing a code doesn't change bookings already made with it: they keep their discount.

A code nobody has used yet can be removed with **Delete**. A code that has been used can only be turned off with **Turn off**: it stays in the list for your records, and nobody can use it again unless you make it active. Bookings that used it keep their discount line.

Codes are entered at checkout on your booking pages and on websites that use the [booking API](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/travel/developers/booking-api/).
