# Use funnels and journeys

> Follow the steps people take in order, see where they stop, and find the most common ways to and from a page.

Funnels and journeys come with the Growth plan.

## Funnels

A funnel is a set of steps in order, such as **/pricing**, then the **Form sent** event, then **/thank-you**. It shows how many visits took each step, how many stopped before the next one, and how long the next step usually took.

### Add a funnel

1. Open the site, then **Funnels**.
2. Select **Add a funnel** and give it a name, such as **Sign-up**.
3. Add two to eight steps. Each step is a page, by its exact address or the start of it, or an event, optionally with a detail that has to match, as in [goals](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/insights/everyone/goals/).
4. Select **Add funnel**.

Editors and Admins can add and change funnels. A funnel looks back: it shows visits from before you added it, for as long as your plan keeps data.

### Read a funnel

Each step is a bar of the visits that got this far. The striped part is the visits that took the first step and stopped before this one, and between the bars is the share that went on.

- A visit counts at a step only once it took every step before it, in that order, in the same visit.
- **Of the first** is the share of visits that took the first step and got this far. **From before** is the share of the step before.
- **Left** is how many visits stopped before this step.
- **Usual time** is the median time from the step before, among visits that took both.

Visitors are recognised for one day only, so a funnel covers one visit. Filters and segments apply: a page filter counts visits that saw that page at any point.

With [known users](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/insights/everyone/known-users/) switched on for the site, choose **Known users, across days** above the funnel to count signed-in people instead. A person counts at a step once they took every step before it, in order, on any day and device in the period, and **Usual time** is then the time between steps across days. Visitors who never signed in are not counted in that view.

## Journeys

**Journeys** shows the most common ways to and from a page or event: a diagram of the pages just before and just after it, then the most common paths of a few pages each way.

1. Open the site, then **Journeys**. It starts with your most viewed page.
2. Under **Follow**, choose another page or an event, such as **Signed up**.

**Before and after** puts the page or event in the middle, the pages visits saw just before it on the left and the pages they went to next on the right. The wider a band, the more visits took it; hover over a band to see how many. Pages beyond the six most common are grouped as **Other pages**.

**Paths to** and **Paths from** list the most common paths of up to three pages each way, and **Just before** and **Just after** list the pages in the diagram with their visits and shares. **Started here** means the visit began there, and **Left the site** means it ended there.

On a busy site, journeys follow the latest 5,000 visits that reached the page or event in the period, and say so.
