# Draft orders

> Put an order together for a customer, with your own prices, discount and delivery charge, then send a link to pay by card, place it on invoice, or mark it as paid.

A draft order is an order your team makes for a customer who phoned, emailed or came by. For example, a school that wants 30 sleeping bags at a group price. Editors and Admins can make draft orders.

## Create a draft

1. Open **Draft orders** under **Sell** and select **New draft order**.
2. Choose an existing customer, or type the name and email address. Choose the company for a business customer: their price list and VAT number apply.
3. Add products. Leave the price empty to use the shop's price, or type your own price for each line, written as the shop shows prices (with or without VAT, as set in **Shop settings**).
4. Add a percentage or amount off, and a delivery charge with a name, if you like.
5. Add the delivery address. VAT is worked out for that country, the same way as at checkout. Without an address, VAT is for your own country.
6. Choose how they pay, and select **Create draft**.

Volume prices, quantity rules and automatic discounts work as they do at checkout, and a delivery address in the US adds sales tax through Stripe Tax when that is on. The total, discount, delivery and tax update as you go. A draft doesn't hold stock and isn't an order yet. Change it as often as you like.

## Turn it into an order

- **Send payment link** (card): the customer gets an email with the items and a button to pay. The link opens Stripe's payment page for the total. When they pay, the draft becomes an order straight away, marked as paid, and they get the usual confirmation. You can copy the link to send it another way. If you change the draft after sending, send the link again so they pay the new total.
- **Place on invoice** (companies with invoice terms): the order is placed with the days to pay you chose, and the invoice is emailed like any [invoice order](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/commerce/everyone/invoices/).
- **Mark as paid**: for a payment taken another way, such as a bank transfer or in a shop. Write how it was paid. The order is placed straight away.

The draft then shows the order number, and the order's history says which draft it came from. Stock is taken when the order is placed, and shows in the [stock history](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/commerce/everyone/stock-history/) as **Draft order placed**.

Select **Cancel** to stop a draft. It stays in the list, and a payment link already sent stops working.

Payment links need **Checkout Sessions** access on your Stripe key. See [Connect Stripe](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/commerce/everyone/connect-stripe/).
