# Tag content with taxonomies

> Create shared lists of terms, such as brands or activities, and use them to tag and filter content.

A taxonomy is a list of terms used to tag and filter content, such as brands, ranges or activities. Terms have no page of their own and no publish step, and one list can tag products, guides and articles alike.

## Create one

Open **Schema › Taxonomies** and choose **New taxonomy**. Add terms, reorder them by dragging, and rename them at any time. Creating taxonomies needs **schema:manage**.

## Value and label

A term's **value** is what fields store and what the API filters on, so it stays fixed. Its **label** is what people read, and can be translated per language.

## Use it

Add a **Taxonomy term** or **Taxonomy terms** field to a content type or component, and choose the taxonomy. Editors then pick terms from the list, and websites can filter entries by them.

Taxonomies belong to the whole space, so the same list serves every environment, region and language.
