# How CMS Orbit is organised

> Organisations, spaces, environments, regions and languages, and why the scope in the top bar matters.

## From the top

The **organisation** is the company. Organisations are created in Bifröst Orbit, which also manages who belongs to them and shows their logo here; **New organisation** in CMS Orbit takes platform admins and owners there. In CMS Orbit the organisation holds each person's role and one or more **spaces**. A space is a website and everything in it: content types, components, pages, media and menus.

Each space has **environments**. **Staging** is for trying things out and checking them; nothing there reaches the public. **Production** is the live website. Pages can be promoted from one to the other.

Your plan sets how many environments each space can have: 2 on Starter, 5 on Growth and no limit on Enterprise. **Configuration › Environments** shows how many are in use, for example "2 of 2 environments on your Starter plan". When the space has them all, **New environment** is switched off with the reason, and an owner can upgrade under Billing in Orbit.

Each environment has **regions**, such as Germany, Switzerland and the US. A region has its own address prefix, time zone and currency, and its own pages. Each region has one or more **languages** (locales), such as de-DE.

When someone picks a region at the top of Bifröst Orbit, CMS Orbit shows the region with the same key. Use the same key here as your organisation's region in Orbit.

## The scope in the top bar

The switcher at the top, such as **Staging / Germany / de-DE**, decides what you are looking at and changing. A page in Germany is a different page from its copy in Switzerland, even with the same address, so they can say different things.

Switching environment, region or language keeps you on the same screen, and on the same page or entry when it has a copy there.

## Search engines and environments

Only a **Production** environment can appear in search results. In every other environment, such as Staging, each page tells search engines not to list it and robots.txt turns crawlers away. Nothing needs setting for this.

To keep Production out of search too, for example before a launch, open **Configuration › Environments**, choose **Edit** on the environment and turn on **Hide from search engines**. Environments that search engines cannot list are marked **hidden from search**, and **SEO › Health** says so at the top. Websites pick up the change within a few minutes.

Single pages can still be kept out of search in Production with the no-index option in the editor's SEO panel.

## Your plan

CMS Orbit's plan is set in Bifröst Orbit, under **Billing**. The account menu shows it next to your role, and a space's dashboard shows it next to the scope, for example "Starter plan" or "Starter trial · 10 days left". Owners and admins can select it to open Billing.

During a trial, and after a plan is cancelled, a notice at the top shows the days left. It fades after a few seconds, and a smaller countdown then stays above your name in the sidebar.

When a trial ends without a plan, or a plan ends, CMS Orbit becomes read-only: everyone can open and export content, but nothing can be changed, and websites are not served. Nothing is deleted. Choosing a plan brings everything back.

## Why regions keep their own pages

Products, prices, claims and regulations differ by country. Keeping a page per region lets each say what is right there, while [linked copies](https://docs.bifrostorbit.com/cms/editors/copy-to-another-region/) keep them in step where they should match.
